Educating our Teens about Sex
By Debora Myers
editor@ladyfire.com

Here we are in the 21st century surrounded by sex everywhere and many of us still fear education. I’m referring to the education of our children about their bodies and sexuality. By education you can offer your children the information needed to make an informed decision about how to deal with their bodies and sexual feelings. We could avoid a lot of therapy in the future for our teens if we educate them instead of filling them with guilt and fear.

I’m no doctor but I have plenty of “common sense” and if you look around you will notice that the educated people usually have a better chance in life. By withholding information you not only stunt your child’s growth but also leave them open for misinformation and myths concerning their sexuality.

It is extremely important to start talking with your children about their body functions when they are young. By approaching them young you can lay the foundation for more detailed discussions about sex later. They will be less embarrassed and more likely to come to you for advice and information as they get older. By approaching the subject of sexuality naturally and as a healthy body function, you eliminate the taboo, guilt and fears associated with the subject and replace those with information to guide them in the right direction.
